Gifts from your IRA (Qualified Charitable Distributions)

If you are 70 ½ years or older and have a traditional IRA, you are eligible to make a tax-free donation directly from your IRA to the Ãå±±ÊÓƵ called a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). Generally speaking, these gifts are tax-free and can be a smarter way to support Ãå±±ÊÓƵ this year.

For those aged 73 and older, Qualified Charitable Distributions can count towards your required minimum distribution, allowing you to use your IRA to support heart healthy lives today, tomorrow, and for generations to come.

Thanks to the Legacy IRA Act, the annual qualified charitable distribution (QCD) limit of $108,000* is now indexed for direct gifts to charity. Individuals age 70½ or older are permitted to make distributions from their IRA directly to charity and avoid reporting of the income.

The Ãå±±ÊÓƵ works with , making it easy for you to donate from your IRA.

Benefits

  • It’s a tax-efficient way to make an impact. Because the distribution isn’t taxable income, it’s effectively a charitable deduction.
  • You can direct your gift to a specific fund or purpose within the Ãå±±ÊÓƵ.
  • The distribution can count towards your annual required minimum distribution (RMD) for those 73 and older.
  • It’s a special opportunity for individuals aged 70½ and older to give up to $108,000* annually.

*Indexed for inflation

How It Works

  1. Notify your IRA custodian to make a direct transfer of the gift amount from your IRA to the Ãå±±ÊÓƵ. Or simply make your gift quickly and securely using our online platform.
  2. Obtain a written acknowledgement from the Ãå±±ÊÓƵ (different from a tax deduction receipt) to benefit from the tax-free treatment.

Donor Spotlight: Anne Koehler

Anne Koehler

Anne Koehler didn’t think of herself as someone who’d make an impact in life-or-death moments. As a former statistics professor, Anne spent her career analyzing numbers and data, not health care. But her own journey through heartache and hope has shown her that progress isn’t just measured in numbers—it’s also made of real, life-changing moments, especially when it comes to heart health.

Over 40 years ago, Anne's late husband, Don, tragically passed away from a heart attack at the age of just 45. Back then, medical knowledge around heart disease was far more limited than it is today. Anne couldn't help but wonder: How many more lives could be saved if there was even better research, education, and awareness about heart disease?

In 2019, Anne’s son faced a similar medical crisis when he experienced cardiac arrest—but this time, the outcome was drastically different. Her son’s life was saved thanks to widespread CPR awareness and education. He was with a friend who knew exactly what to do: he called 911, and with the dispatcher’s guidance, performed CPR until help arrived. That immediate intervention was the difference between life and death. “Things have changed dramatically,” Anne says. The progress she’s seen has only deepened her belief in the power of research and education.

Anne turned her passion into a lasting impact by making a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from her IRA to the Ãå±±ÊÓƵ. "A QCD is a great way to give directly to causes you care about," Anne says. "It’s an efficient way to make a big impact.” A QCD allows donors to give directly from their IRA to a qualified charity without having to pay taxes on the amount donated. This tax-efficient method not only helps donors fulfill their charitable goals but also counts toward the required minimum distribution for those age 73 and above, making it an effective way to give back while benefiting from potential tax savings. Through this gift, Anne is helping continue the work that saved her son’s life, knowing that her donation will fuel more breakthroughs in heart health.

Anne has seen the power of progress, and she’s eager to see how the next century of medical advancements will continue to change lives. With each donation, Anne isn’t just giving money—she’s giving her faith in a healthier, more hopeful future, one heartbeat at a time.
